The Contemporary Social Worker

As recently as a decade ago, there were far more licensed social workers than there were positions; however, it appears that trend has receded over the past three years.  Today, many mental health clinics and county or state governments are facing a shortage of social workers who can effectively provide assistance to those families most in need.  Perhaps it’s society as a whole and the collective problems of today’s family or maybe it’s burnout due to a combination of cuts made in the mid and late 1990s and the demanding aspect of fewer counselors doing more than ever before.  Regardless, says A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and EmploymentCrossing.com founder, there is a significant shortage of licensed and experienced social workers in many areas of the country and agencies and governments are finally taking notice.

Defining a Social Worker

In broad terms, a social worker spends his days meeting with people who are struggling on some level, whether it’s financial, emotional or familial.  He takes assessments, meets with attorneys, physicians and other mental health professionals, all with the goal of improving the lives of his clients.  Unlike many of the specialties within the medical field, a social worker isn’t limited to a certain age group or those with specific problems; instead, says the EmploymentCrossing.com founder, social workers may work with teens in the morning hours and then meet with an elderly citizen in the afternoon to find a solution that will enable her to receive her much needed prescription medicine.  Social workers also find themselves extending a helping hand and professional services to rape victims, battered women, troubled children, foster children, former prisoners who are attempting to re-enter everyday life and those at high risk for suicide, drug overdoses or sexual abuse.  In short, if it’s a human condition, a social worker steps in to provide assistance in any way he can.

Defining the Mindset of a Social Worker

It’s been said social workers “do God’s work” and in many ways, that’s true.  These professionals must keep an open mind, refrain from judgment and avoid the urge to take every troubled soul under his wing.  He must maintain perspective if he’s to effectively advocate for his client.  He must be a good listener, have at the ready any number of resources for a range of situations and he must maintain objectivity while also keeping a “tough skin”.  A. Harrison Barnes explains social workers enter this profession not get to rich, but to make a difference with what sometimes feels like little, if any, appreciation.  “It takes a certain mentality and a certain skillset to be a successful social worker”.

A formal education is required and each state has its own compliance laws.  Further, where one agency might require a very specific degree, other agencies are a bit more versatile.  Barnes states that it appears there is a growing trend where many states are now requiring social workers to possess a master’s degree (MSW).  He recommends checking with your state’s licensing department to ensure you’re taking the right steps.

It’s certainly a rewarding career choice, but don’t expect to get out unscathed.  The very requirement needed to be successful in this role is also what will exhaust you every day.

Is it Really All About “Who You Know”?

Ever wondered if who know really determines if you get a job?  What if you know a lot of folks who are supposedly in the position to get you in front of an interviewing manager?  We asked A. Harrison Barnes, Hound.com founder and president, his views on networking and the old adage of, “it’s who you know”.  Here’s what he had to say:

“First, there are definite benefits to knowing the right person; however, just because that “right person” moves you to  the front of the line, you still have to prove you can do the job and you have to convince that hiring manager that you indeed have what it takes”, says Barnes.  This is one reason some people are hesitant about referring someone to their employer.  They may like you perfectly well, but they may not be aware of your abilities as an accountant or human resources leader.

When possible, you should also try to develop your networking towards a mentor or even a former employer who can recommend you without hesitation because he knows you have what it takes.  A mentor naturally is one who’d know; after all, he helped build that foundation that is your career.

There are those whose neighbor is the company president and who’ve landed a job because of it, but if you can’t pull your weight, your time spent with the neighbor’s company isn’t likely going to be rewarding for your or advantageous for him.  Remember – you can leave the job, but odds are, you’re going to be neighbors for quite some time.  This is why you shouldn’t take advantage of someone’s position for the wrong reasons.

The Hound.com founder also says it’s important to not write off the administrative assistant or file clerk as an important contact.  It very well could be the hiring manager believes the sun rises and sets on the secretary who never drops the ball, never fails to schedule the meeting or never forgets the client’s cold nature and remembers to turn the thermostat down.  Let’s face it, many companies are successful because of those in the background who make it happen.

Finally, A. Harrison Barnes reminds job seekers that there are many incredible positions that are had every day with absolutely not networking involved.  These jobs are filled by those who didn’t make a phone call and who didn’t call in a favor.  They knew they had what it takes without the head start and as a result, they easily bypassed even those with favorable recommendations that preceded their interviews.

Bottom line is not always about who you know, but rather, what you know, what you bring to the table and what you contribute to a company’s overall success.  Believe it or not, in the long run, that’s all that counts.

Career Focus: Museum Curator

There is something so glamorous and fascinating about museum curators.  They’re surrounded each day by beautiful art, historical pieces or other exquisite material things that have so much significance that they’re protected via any number of methods, up to and including security guards.  But what exactly does a museum curator do throughout the course of a day?  We asked renowned career coach and Hound.com founder what it is that makes a curator’s job so envious – and whether or not the salary is as envious as the glamour of the position itself.

Curators are responsible for making the sometimes difficult choice of selecting one or two pieces of art to be shown in a museum’s limited space.  The difficulty, as many curators will tell you, is choosing those few pieces when you must decide between several historical and valuable collections.  Once they’ve chosen what their museum will house, they must then creatively display those pieces that protect the valuables, but that also allow visitors to get a true sense of what they’re viewing.  They must also showcase them in such a way that any piece on either side complements the next.  Further, they must ensure the museum itself beautifully showcases the art with strategic lighting, flooring and walls.

The Hound.com founder says curators also work to locate especially rare pieces and many will spend months or even years to acquire various collections.  Sculptures, photography and paintings are all creations one’s likely to discover in any museum around the country.  As A. Harrison Barnes explains, all of this sounds like a dream career – and it is; but there is also a huge responsibility a curator must shoulder.  In recent years, attempts at forgery and thievery have become sophisticated and even technologically advanced. A curator is always aware of the dangers that lurk in every corner of his or her museum.  After all, the sole responsibility lies on his or her shoulders.

Most curators possess a master’s degree and some museums even require a doctoral.  The specialties and educational backgrounds might range from art history, archaeology and business.  What Barnes says is most surprising is that virtually all museum curators begin as an assistant and work their way up the ladder.  During this phase, they, of course, will pursue the applicable educational requirements and in the process, they receive training during the course of the work day.  The best curators are those who have a broad range of experience with every kind of art and in any form.

Curators will often travel the globe; sometimes taking whirlwind trips around the world to see a single pottery vase.  Their salaries are quite impressive and the best curators can easily secure salaries of $150,000 or more on an annual basis.

The outlook for careers such as these are expected to grow; albeit slowly, as more museums are erected around the world.  It’s an exciting career and one that offers a worldly existence.  For those who have worked hard, the rewards they reap are almost always worth the sacrifices they make

Why “The Office” Will Never Be Your Office

OK – admit it – you love The Office, right?  We all do.  It serves as the perfect escape and allows us to live vicariously through the characters – at least in thirty minute increments.  Steve Carell announced the upcoming season would be his last; we can all hope this show, going into it’s seventh season, won’t lose its magic when it’s minus the star.  Have you ever wondered what it’d really be like in the “real world” if you worked alongside a real-life Dwight, Andy or even Creed?  Let’s take a look at these fictional characters and see how they might translate into a co-worker out here in the real world.  We asked A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and Hound.com founder, for his take.  His answers gave us insight (not to mention made us laugh):

Dwight K. Schrute – Ah, the goofy and frankly, disturbing, character who tries so hard to catch his power trip and ride it into the sunset. Is he the assistant manager or assistant to the manager?  Who knows. And how long would your own manager tolerate his demands?  It’s difficult to quantify him.  He’s gullible, loyal to a fault and even a bit goofy.  Admit it, though – he’d be a bit difficult to handle for eight hours a day, yes?  His dry wit, while written by comedy geniuses, would likely drive any of us crazy, says A. Harrison Barnes.  Would you really want to witness one of the engineers coating your manager’s head in peanut butter?

Speaking of managers, how about that Michael Scott?  He’s ruined all of his employee’s weddings, he dragged another employee, literally kicking and screaming, in an effort to get her into rehab; this, says the Hound.com founder, would result in lawsuits, possible criminal charges and likely, the loss of his job in the real world.  He annihilated the warehouse and forwarded a compromising photo of himself with his own boss to the entire company (Can you say sexual harassment?).  How long would he last as an employee in your company?

Andy Bernard – Wow.  What can you say?  The musically inclined goofus, complete with the hokey ability to contort his face in any number of disturbing (read: hilarious) angles makes him hard to resist.  Odds are, we have all likely found ourselves working with others who mirror Andy and his “unique” personality.  It’s difficult not like him, though, says Barnes.  He has this personality that’s both endearing and annoying at the same time.  His stint in anger management might not have happened if he were working in a true office setting; there’s a good chance he would have been fired on the spot.

And finally, Stanley Hudson – quiet, unassuming, hard working and crossword puzzle connoisseur, his one liners are classic.  “Did I stutter?” will go down in television history as one of the best one-liners of all times.  Again, though, if you and I attempted such a bold stance with our own managers, the reply would be, “Did I stutter?” when we couldn’t get our desks cleared out fast enough after being fired on the spot.

Real life and real jobs are never as funny as those we look forward to each week, courtesy of the television.  Still, as Barnes explains, it’s up to each of us to make the best of our own workdays.  We can approach it with confidence and a good attitude, or we can also choose to complicate the lives of those around us – and make ourselves miserable in the process (not to mention find ourselves looking for a new career)
